no new work

it's been a while since my last post and i really haven't done much in the way of sculpting mostly because of my new job. however i thought i would put up some pictures of some older work that has yet to be shown.

this was my first attempt at pumpkin carving of an abc robot.

this is the small set for one of my animations, these are just light tests but it is still one of my favorite sets that i have made. It is made of foam board that i cut and bent into a tunnel, i then coated the walls in pva glue and sand and the floor is made from pva mixed with shards of plaster then coated in water effect.

this is a stop motion puppet that i made of a victorian soldier. the skull (pictured left) has a hinged jaw that could be move using a bolt that resides in the center of the skull. i used an allen key to move it and i hid the hole in the head with his hair. his face was made of a thin skin of latex (pictured below).

this is the sculpt for my two-face costume. I first sculpted a rough likeness of myself (left), i then started the final sculpt. this was the first sculpt that I didn't use references for as i had an idea of what I wanted it to look like.

this is a commission sculpt that i did for a young graphic artist, it is based on his comic book character Brocolli Man. he had a rough idea of what he wanted with it and gave me a quick drawing but i was given quite a bit of artistic license. as you can see he was pretty happy with it and it took about ten minutes until he stopped swearing.

hello again.
i haven't done much recently as i have been searching for a job and with christmas present searching. however i have managed to sculpt a few things so here they are.
finding nemo
"hey there mr grumpy gills"
first off i apologize for the background of this picture, like all my work this is made from super sculpey. the reason i made this that i was watching finding nemo and it came to my favorite scene, so i thought that i should make it. it took 1 day to make marlin and 2 days for dory.
parsley the lion figure

i made parsley the lion for my girlfriend as part of her christmas presents, it didn't take too long as it's only small but i am quite happy with the detailing.

if you have any questions about sculpting please leave a comment and i will reply as best i can.

cheers

CLONE WARS WICKET

I was watching Star Wars the Clone Wars series 3 the other day and saw the episode with chewbacca and it got me wondering, what would an ewok look like? so I grabbed a picture off the internet of the most loved ewok, wicket. i decided that i would only make a bust as sculpting the body would drive me nuts and i only wanted to spend a day making it. i quickly drew a slightly simplified design.
once I was happy with the design i got my materials and started sculpting the face, this took the best part of 5 hours. I used super sculpey with metal ball bearings for eyes. I attached each clump of hair individually. once that was done I made the rest of the head in the same way. when everything was cooked i used green stuff to add some finer detail on his hood, fur on the ears and to fill in some of the gap on the face.

when everything had set i painted it using games workshop acrylics. from start to finish this took 15 hours and is roughly 3 inches tall (not including base pictured below).

old work part 3

As a model maker I, of course, started with games workshop miniatures. The model on the left is based on one of my favorite drawings (below). i had to build the legs and lower torso from scratch and heavily convert the rest. Although i made this figure about four years ago, i am still proud of it as I got quite a lot of detail into it.

this is another sculpt that is based on a drawing. it is wolverine being eaten by a t-rex. i wanted to do this for ages but didn't know how to start. then i got the idea to get a t-rex toy and convert it, but all of the ones that i found never quite fit the bill. then one day i went to hastings and went into a little model store and my girlfriend called me over and showed me this facial reconstruction kit of a rex. it consisted of a skull and tools. i made the rex out of milliput and wolverine out of super sculpey (my first time using this material).

I designed this yoda whilst on holiday in greece. when i got back i put it with all my other used pads and doodles and forgot about it for a few years. One day i was rooting through my drawings and i found it. the following week i was having a star wars day with my friends so i decided to make it. i only had a little bit of sculpey so i got a jam jar lid and started sculpting.

i made this ork bust because i was bored and had some clay to hand. it was a bit of a quick job to make. i think i made it in a day including painting.

this was one of my last games workshop figures that i made. The original model was just a plain dreadnaught that came in a box set. I then proceeded to completely destroy the poor thing and broke out the green stuff. this took about a week to build and i am particularly happy with the little nurglings sitting on it.

work continued

Hello again.
last time i ended with the money tree. here are a few pics from it.
this was the biggest stop-motion production that the university had seen that involved two sets roughly 1 meter square each. the forest was fairly straight forward but time consuming, but it was the house set that tom (co-director) and i really had fun. we put as many references in as we could. these included a pinup darth vader poster, apollo G poster that has the rocket from "A Grand Day Out" (I still want to make this into a real poster) and pacman pizza boxes. we spent some time putting a lot of detail into the props, even though it would never be seen. an example of this were the bills that littered the floor that i wrote on computer and then shrank to scale.

for full detail of the production have a look at this:
http://tommygrainger.blogspot.com/

this is a steampunk robot that i made in my first year of uni. unfortunately it completely failed as a puppet as you can probably tell but it was my first attempt. i did not mind that much as we never filmed due to time limits. despite its failings it is still one of my favorite creations and has been displayed at Stoke Your Fires Animation Festival. it is made of Styrofoam and bits from the pound shop. whilst i was building this i was also building another puppet and a large transport vehicle (pictured below) as well as help build an exterior pub set at roughly 1/6th scale.

this next item was really my first prosthetic and i made it for my friends birthday. it is my twoface costume. i made it by using a mannequin head as a base. i then sculpted on my likeness so that when i sculpted the prosthetic it would hold some of my features.
i then made a mould out of plaster. then i pasted in some latex that, when dry, i painted. i also added a faint eyebrow using my own leg hair. for the suit i just cut two suits in half and stuck them together (i also sanded one of the sides as some more detail). i also dyed my hair which was a lot harder to do than i thought it would be. i have to say though that pretty much everyone put quite a lot of effort into their costumes. i have no idea how we found time. and only the party boy himself (who went as judge dredd) immersed himself completely into his character, going to the extent of going up to a couple of policemen and proclaiming "I AM THE LAW" at the top of his voice (that is still my ringtone to this day.
i wore this costume again to win 1st prize in a costume competition.

thats all for now, thank you for looking at my blog
